early life
John Madden was born on April 10, 1936 in Austin, Minnesota. In search of job opportunities, his father moved his family to California to find a job as an auto mechanic. John was still very young, and most of his youth was spent in a small town south of San Francisco. After attending a Catholic school, he moved to Jefferson High School. In high school, John Madden quickly became a high-performance member of the football team. John is a talented and versatile young athlete who has performed well in both offensive and defensive positions. He also proved to be a talented baseball player.
College football
After graduating from high school in 1954, John Madden immediately started playing football at San Mateo College. One season later, he moved to the University of Oregon to study preparatory law and played on the school’s football team. During his time in Oregon, the first of two major injuries brought Madden’s career to a standstill. Knee surgery forced him to be absent for most of the season.
After recovering from his first injury, John Madden returned to San Mateo and played for another season. Next, he moved to California Polytechnic State University to play offense and defense for the Broncos. Madden once again proved his worth as a football player, established himself as a powerful offensive tackle and won all conference honors. While earning a bachelor’s degree in education, he also served as a catcher for the college baseball team, and later received a master’s degree in education in 1961.
Professional football
