Born in St. Albans, Vermont in 1969, John Leclerc played college hockey at the University of Vermont, where he struggled with injuries. He was selected 33rd overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1987 NHL draft.
He went on to play for the Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins. Leclerc was part of the Legion of Doom, with Eric Lindros at the flyer. When he played for the Canadiens, Leclerc was part of the 1993 Stanley Cup winning team. He won the Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy in 1995, the Bobby Clarke Trophy in 1997 and 1998, and was a five-time NHL All-Star from 1996 to 2000. LeClair played in nearly 1,000 professional regular-season games, scoring more than 400 goals and recording more than assists. He represented the U.S. men’s national team internationally, and again in the Olympics in 1998 and 2002. He chairs the John Leclerc Foundation, which makes donations to organizations in Vermont that help children. In 2009, he was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
