Hiatt received the 2000 Nashville Music Awards for Songwriter/Artist of the Year and the 2008 American Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, and his music has been covered by dozens of pop artists, including Night of Three Dogs, Bob Dylan, Linda Longstadt, Bonnie Ritter, Paula Abdul, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Keith Urban, Mandy Moore and Jimmy Buffett.
