In addition, Grisham is an activist and politician who served as a Democrat in the Mississippi House of Representatives for six years.
Early life and career start
John Ray Grisham Jr. was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas in 1955, the second child of five siblings. His father John is a construction worker, and his mother Wanda is a housewife. When Grisham was four years old, the family moved to Southven, Mississippi. As a child, he expressed interest in becoming a baseball player; he also became a devout Christian, saying that conversion to religion was the most important event in his life. As a teenager, Grisham worked as a variety of odd jobs, including a plant waterer, plumber, and salesperson. Encouraged by his mother, Grisham attended Northwest Mississippi Community College and Delta State University in Cleveland, and eventually transferred three times before earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Mississippi State University. He determined to become a tax lawyer, so he studied at the University of Mississippi School of Law; he decided to turn to civil litigation, and he received a doctorate in law in 1981.
Grisham worked in criminal law for about ten years and represented the seventh district of the Mississippi House of Representatives as a Democratic Party from 1984 to 1990. At the same time, when he overheard a young girl telling the jury the traumatic story of her abuse while wandering in the courtroom, he had the idea to write the first book. Grisham’s speculation on the case led to a “killing moment,” which took three years to complete. After being rejected by 28 publishing houses, the book was finally published in 1989 by the relatively unknown Wynwood Press.
“Company” and main fame
Grisham’s first best-selling book was his second novel “The Company.” The title stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for 47 weeks and became the seventh best-selling novel of the year in 1991. Grisham gave up his legal work after this success and only returned briefly in a case in 1996, which became the largest verdict in his career. For the next ten years, Grisham maintained its enthusiasm, winning the second bestseller of the year in 1992 and 1993, and ranking first every year from 1994 to 2000. The titles of the books over the years include “Introduction to Pelican”, “Client”, “Rainmaker” and “Out of Control Jury.”
As of 2021, Grisham’s nine novels have been adapted into movies. The first and most financially successful was “The Company” starring Tom Cruise and Holly Hunt in 1993. Its box office revenue was 270 million U.S. dollars. Later that year, the adaptation of “The Pelican Briefing” starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington had box office revenue of $195 million. Other adaptations of Grisham’s work include the Oscar-nominated “The Client” starring Susan Sarandon in 1994, as well as “The Client” by Scott Glenn and Lowe. Starting with “Painted Houses” in 2001, Grisham expanded his literary scope beyond the law and paid more attention to the rural areas of the southern United States. However, he continues to write legal thrillers, releasing at least one each year. One such thriller “The Subpoena” brought the author back to the top of the charts when it became the first book in 2002. Other best sellers of this period include “The Last Jury” in 2004 and “The Broker” in 2005. In addition to these works, Grisham has also written sports and comedy novels, including original scripts for “The Stand”, “Fight for Pizza”, “Cabojo” and the baseball movie “Mickey”. He also wrote a series of legal thrillers catering to middle-grade children, about the story of the 13-year-old aspiring lawyer Theodore Boone. Grisham has been married to Renee Jones since 1981; they have two children, Shea and Ty. He also donated $1.2 million to the Virginia Cavaliers, which was used to renovate the University of Virginia Davenport venue. Grisham is further committed to various social causes; among them, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Innocence Project, which is dedicated to the exemption and release of unjustly convicted persons. Grisham also brought his activism to “Dateline NBC”, PBS’ “Bill Moyers Journal” and “New York Times”.
Grisham and his family split time between Victorian homes on the outskirts of Oxford, Mississippi; homes in Charlottesville, Virginia and Destin, Florida; and an apartment in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
