John Glenn is an American astronaut and politician. In 1962, he became the first American astronaut to orbit the earth. From 1974 to 1999, he served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio. Glenn was born in Cambridge, Ohio on July 18, 1921 to Clara and Old John. He grew up in New Concord, Ohio, and attended New Concord High School. Glenn continued his education at Muskingen College. He graduated from engineering with a bachelor of science degree.

Glenn joined the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in 1942. He completed his training in 1943 and was deployed as a Marine Corps fighter pilot during World War II. He performed a total of 59 combat missions in the South Pacific. Glenn continues to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. He completed 90 missions during the Korean War. Glen graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in 1954. From 1956 to 1959, he served as a test pilot for Navy and Marine Corps jet fighters. He completed a supersonic flight from Los Angeles to New York in July 1957. Known as the “Bullet Plan”, the mission was completed in 3 hours and 23 minutes.
Glen was recruited by NASA’s space program in 1958. He was selected along with six other people. They are called Mercury 7. Glenn made history on February 20, 1962, when he drove the Friendship 7 spacecraft around the earth three times. The mission lasted 4 hours and 55 minutes. Glenn was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978. He was inducted into the American Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990.
Glenn began his political career as a member of the Democratic Party in 1964. He ran for a seat in the U.S. Senate from Ohio, but was forced to withdraw due to a concussion. Glenn succeeded in securing a seat in the Senate for the third time in 1974. He served four consecutive terms from December 1974 to January 1999. He also served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Government Affairs from 1987 to 1995. Glen returned to space on October 29, 1998, aboard the space shuttle Discovery. He was 77 years old at the time. In May 2012, President Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

John Glenn passed away on December 8, 2016, at the age of 95. The official did not disclose the cause of his death. A week before his death, he was hospitalized at James Cancer Hospital at Oregon State University Wexner Medical Center. Since 2013, Glenn’s health has deteriorated rapidly. In recent years, he suffered a stroke and underwent heart valve and knee replacement surgery. His last resting place was in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia. Glenn is 5 feet 10 inches tall and has a net worth of $5 million. From 1943 until his death in 2016, he married “Anna Custer”. They have two children, David and Caroline. He has two grandchildren who survived.
