John Arrillaga was an American real estate tycoon and philanthropist who passed away in January 2022 with a net worth of $2.5 billion. John Arrillaga is one of Silicon Valley’s largest landowners. He owns over 20 million square feet of commercial real estate in Silicon Valley.
He was born on April 3, 1937, into a family of Basque descent. Arrillaga attended Stanford University on a basketball scholarship, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Collegiate Fraternity. After graduating in the 1960s, Arrillaga teamed up with Richard Peery to buy California farmland near Stanford University with the intention of turning it into office space.
Over the next few decades, the two partners became one of the largest commercial owners in Silicon Valley, owning more than 20,000,000 square feet of properties.
John Arieraga made many generous donations during his lifetime, including a $151 million gift to Stanford University, the largest gift Stanford has ever received from a living donor. He previously gave the school $100 million. In honor of his endowment, Stanford University named several buildings after John and his family, most notably the Alumni Center and Athletic Center.
John was married to Francis Cook Ali Laga from 1968 until her death in 1995. They have two children. Their daughter, Laura Arrillaga, is married to Silicon Valley legend Marc Andreessen.
