He played little hockey for the St. Thomas Travelers and won the Ontario Little Hockey Association Championship. He played for the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs of the Ontario Minor Hockey League.
He also played for the St. Thomas Stars and Barry Colts, as well as Sault Ste. Mary Greyhound. He received OHL and CHL Rookie of the Year awards.
