Joseph Medicine Crow is a Crow historian, anthropologist and author. He is the last surviving war chief of the crow tribe. Raven was born on October 27, 1913, near Lodge Glass, Montana. He attended Bacone College in 1928 and then Linfield College in 1938. He completed a master’s degree in anthropology at the University of Southern California in 1939. He has since received honorary doctorates from several different universities.

Crowe served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He fought in World War II as a scout for the 103rd Infantry Division. During the war, he successfully completed the four tasks required to become a war chief. Raven was named tribal historian and anthropologist in 1948. He has authored several books, including From the Heart of the Raven Nation (1992), Brave Wolf and Thunderbird (1998) and Counting Coup (2006). He appeared in several documentaries, including PBS’ 2007 miniseries “War.”
Raven was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2009. He also received the Bronze Star and the French Legion of Honor in 2008 for his military achievements.

Joe Medicine Crow passed away on April 3, 2016 at the age of 102. Although this was most likely due to old age, no official cause of death was reported. He was living in a hospice in Billings when he died.
