Joseph Henry Gallaggiola is an American baseball player and sports announcer. He’s 6 feet tall and serves as a catcher. Galagiola was born on February 12, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri. He grew up near Hill in St. Louis and was friends with baseball player Yogi Berra. Their block on Elizabeth Avenue was renamed the “Hall of Fame” in 2003.

Gallaggiola made his major league baseball debut in 1946 with the St. Louis Cardinals. In his rookie season, he shot 6 of 19 in five games. They eventually won the 1946 World Series. He played his first game in 1947 with Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Gallaggioola parted ways with the Cardinals in 1951. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, followed by the Chicago Cubs, and later to the New York Giants. Before retiring in 1954, Gallaggiola played a total of 676 games over nine seasons. He wrote the publications It’s Anybody’s Ballgame (1980) and Just Play Ball (2007).
Garagiola started his broadcasting career in 1955 at KMOX radio station. He signed with NBC Television/Radio in 1961. While on NBC, he hosted several World Series games, made game-by-game announcements, provided color commentary and hosted pregame event shows. Gallaggiola was a regular panelist on The Today Show and co-hosted the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show from 1994 to 2002. He received the Ford Frick Award in 1991, followed by the Buck O’Neal Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1970.

Joe Gallaggiola passed away on March 23, 2016 at the age of 90. Officials did not disclose the cause of death. Garagiola was married to “Audrie Rose” in 1949 until her death in 2016. He is survived by his wife and three children, Joe Jr., Steve and Gina.
