Jimmy Riley is a Jamaican reggae singer and record producer. He is a member of the vocal groups The Sensations and The Uniques. He was born Martin James Norman Riley on May 22, 1954 in Jonestown, Kingston. He grew up in the Waterhouse area and attended Kingston High School. Riley met Keith “Slim” Smith, leader of The Techniques, at school. He started listening to their songs and became interested in a music career.
Profession
Riley started his musical career at a very young age. He founded the band The Sensations and collaborated with legendary music producer Arthur “Duke” Reid. The Sensations gained early attention with songs like “Everyday is Just a Holiday” and “Those Guys.” Riley left the band in 1967 to join Slim and The Techniques. They released a string of hit singles, including the singles “Watch This Sound” and “My Conversation”. After the members disbanded, a new group was formed by members Slim, Riley and Lloyd Charmers. They named the trio The Uniques and achieved success with songs such as “Let Me Go Girl”, “Build My World” and “My Conversation”.
As a solo artist, Riley recorded his first song “Eat Where You Sleep Last Night”. He has worked with Trojan Records, followed by Sly & Robbie’s Taxi Label. The album Sly and Robbie Presents Jimmy Riley: Pull Up Selector was released in 2009. In 2013, Riley released the highly anticipated album Contradiction. It features the voices of his son and reggae artists Sizzla Kalonji and Fantan Mojah.

Jimmy Riley passed away on March 23, 2016 at the age of 61. According to reports, the cause of his death was cancer. His family and friends, including son Tarrus Riley, survived. In 1996, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Bob Marley Reggae Festival in California.
