Jimmy Breslin is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist and author. Known as a “street reporter,” he writes columns for the New York Daily News, The New York Post, and Newsday, among others. He has authored several fiction and non-fiction books. Breslin was born James Earl Breslin on October 17, 1928 in Queens, New York. His father James was a musician and his mother Francis was a teacher. He has a sister named Deirdre. Breslin was raised by his mother near Ozone Park in Queens. He attended John Adams High School, followed by Long Island University. He was an avid football player in high school.

Breslin started his career as a reporter for the Long Island Press. He has been a columnist for the New York Herald Tribune, The New York Post, The New York Daily News, and Newsday. In 1969, he ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of the New York City Council. Breslin reported on “Son of Sam (David Berkowitz) Murder” in 1977. In 1986, he hosted his own late-night show Jimmy Breslin’s People on ABC.
Breslin’s first novel, The Gang of No Shots, was published by Viking Press in 1969. The book was featured in the 1971 film starring Jerry Auerbach and Robert De Niro. Breslin’s other publications include I Want to Thank My Brain for Remembering Me (1996), I Don’t Want to Go to Prison (2001), and The Good Mouse (2008). His film credits include If Ever I See You Again (1978) with Joe Brooks and John Leguizamo’s Summer of Sam (1999).
Breslin received the George Polk Prize in 1985. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 1986.
