Jim Vance is an American television news anchor based in Washington, D.C. He has been an anchor for NBC4 for over 45 years. Throughout his career, he has won multiple awards, including 17 local Emmys. Vance was born James Howard Vance III on January 10, 1942 in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. His father, James Jr., was a World War II veteran, and his mother, Eleanor, held various jobs in Philadelphia. At the age of 9, Vance lost his father to cirrhosis of the liver. He was mainly raised by his grandparents. He completed a BA in Secondary Education at Cheney University in Pennsylvania.

After college, Vance taught English at a junior high school for several years. His first reporting gig was for the Philadelphia Independent. He then did a brief report for WKBS-TV. Vance was hired by WRC-TV in 1969. The station is owned by NBC and is based in Washington, DC. In 1972, Vance was promoted to co-anchor at the station. He was the first African American to hold the above position at the time.
Vance worked with Glenn Link at WRC-TV from 1972 to 1976. He worked with Sue Simmons from 1976 to 1980. He is also known for his work with news anchor Doreen Gentzler. During his tenure, he covered incidents such as the “Siege of Hanafi in 1977” and the “Crash of Air Florida Flight 90 in 1982”. Vance appeared in the political thriller State of Play (2009) starring Russell Crowe. He also made cameo appearances on the NBC series “The Incident” and “The Black List.” Vance has won a total of 17 local Emmys. He was inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame in 2007.

Jim Vance passed away on July 22, 2017 at the age of 75. He reportedly died of complications from cancer. His cancer diagnosis was first announced in May 2017. Vance was married three times. His third wife, Kathy McCampbell, was a TV producer for Channel 4 News. His wife and his children Dawn, Amani and Brendon survived.
