Jim Harrison was an American poet, novelist, and essayist. He is best known for the novella “Legend of Autumn” (1979) and novels such as “Darwa” (1988) and “True North” (2004). Harrison was born on December 11, 1937, to parents Norma and Winfield in Grayling, Michigan. After an accident during his childhood, he lost sight in his left eye. He attended Haslett High School and received his diploma in 1956. He studied comparative literature at Michigan State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1960 and a master’s degree in 1964. In 1958, a tragic car accident took the lives of his father and sister.

Harrison taught English at Stony Brook University from 1965 to 1966. His early career as a poet began in the mid-1960s. His first collection of poetry was “Bland Songs” (1965), followed by “Walking” (1967) and “Places” (1968). Recent publications include “Saving the Sun” (2006), “Song of the Unreasonable” (2011) and “Float of the Dead” (2016). Harrison’s first novel was Wolf: A False Memoir, published in 1971. He went on to publish Good Days to Die (1973) and The Farmer (1976). One of Harrison’s most popular works is Autumn Tale (1979). It features three novellas, “Vengeance,” “The Man Who Dropped His Name,” and “Legend of Autumn.” Two of the works were adapted into feature films. Recent novellas include Julep (1994), The Summer He Didn’t Die (2005) and The Ancient Bard (2016).

Jim Harrison passed away on March 26, 2016 at the age of 78. According to reports, the cause of his death was a heart attack. He was married to “Linda King” from 1959 until her death in 2015. They have two daughters, Jamie Pottenberg and Anna Holzberg.
