Caldwell was a wide receiver coach in Louisville from 1982 to 1984 and 1985. He joined the NFL in 2001 as quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. From 2002 to 2008, Caldwell served as the quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. He got his first NFL head coaching job with the Colts from 2009 to 2011. From 2012 to 2013, he was the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens before becoming the head coach of the Detroit Lions in 2014.
