JID is a rapper/songwriter in Atlanta and is currently signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records. His records include the album The Never Story (2017) and EP, DiCaprio (2015). He was nominated for the 2018 XXL freshman class. JID was born on October 31, 1990 in Destin Route, Atlanta, Georgia. His parents are Casey and Carl Root. He has 6 older brothers and sisters. Nicknamed “JID” because his grandmother called him neurotic when he was a child. JID attended Stephenson High School, where he played football and running. He led Stephenson to win the regional football championships in 2007 and 2008. His high school honors include first-team defensive guards across the region and statewide honor awards. Post University, JID re-established contact with the hip-hop duo EarthGang (Johnny Venus, Doctur Dot). He appeared in the duo single “Kick’n It” on the album The Better Party (2010). They later collaborated on the 2012 song “Purple Paradise”, which included Stillz. JID’s first mixtape Route of All Evil was released in June 2012. It is available via digital download. His second mixtape, Para Tu, was released in October 2013. The tape was reissued in December 2017. JID and Spillage Village have released many albums Bears Like This (2014), Bears Like This Too (2015) and Bears Like This Too (2016). The latter features works by J. Cole, Mac Miller and Childish Major. JID participated in the “Journey of These Days” (2014) with Ab-Soul and the “Elephant Eyes Tour” (2015) with Omen. He also participated in the “Too High To Riot Tour” (2016) with Bas.

JID kicked off 2015 with his first EP DiCaprio. It features cameos from EarthGang, OG Maco, Key!. And Jace. The 6-track EP contains songs such as “LeTrow” and “LeHooligangs”. JID signed with J. Cole’s Dreamville Records in February 2017. His first studio album, The Never Story, was subsequently released in March 2017 by Dreamville, Spillage Village and Interscope Records. The album is ranked 14th on the Heatseeker album chart and 197th on the Billboard 200. It was supported by the single “Never” produced by Christo and Childish Major. Never’s official video has been viewed more than 40,000 times on YouTube.

In 2017, JID acted as the opening performance of J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only Tour. Next, he co-hosted the “Never Had Shit Tour” with EarthGang. JID’s 2018 first single “My Name Is” was released on January 25. It now has 190K+ spins on SoundCloud. JID is one of the nine features of the cover XXL 2018 freshman class. Other members include BlocBoy JB, Wifisfuneral, Stefflon Don and Ski Mask the Slump God.
