In September 2008, Vargas made his professional boxing debut at the age of 19 against Joel Gonzalez. He won by knockout in the first round. He then defeated former IBO light welterweight champion “Daniel Sarmiento” in 2010 and former WBA light welterweight champion “Vivian Harris” in 2011. Vargas defeated Nigeria’s Wale Omotoso in March 2013 for the vacant WBC Continental Americas welterweight title. He won the WBA (regular) and IBO super featherweight title in April 2014 over Russia’s Khabib Allakhverdiev.
