Jerry Van Dyke is an American actor and comedian. He has played unforgettable roles on TV, including the Dick Van Dijk show, coach, accidental family and my car mom. His film works include “Love and Kiss” (1965) and “Angel in Pocket” (1969). Van Dijk was born on July 27, 1931 to Hazel and Loren. They acted as stenographers and traveling salesmen respectively. He has an older brother, Dick, who is also an actor. Van Dijk grew up in Danville, Illinois, where he attended Danville High School.

Van Dyke began his stand-up comedy career when he was a teenager. After graduating from high school, he performed in local nightclubs and strip clubs. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952. During his tenure, he performed with the “Tops in Blue” band. In 1954, they appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. Van Dyke got a job at the television station “WTHI-TV” in Terre Haute, Indiana. His early television works include The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Judy Garland Show. He played a supporting role in the film “Mclintock” in the 1960s! (1963) and Palm Springs Weekend (1963). He hosted the 1963 game show “Picture This” for CBS.
Van Dijk refused to play an important role in the CBS TV series “Gilligan Island” and “The Andy Griffith Show.” He chose to play “Dave Crabtree” in “My Car Mom” (1965-66) and “Jerry Webster” in “A Family of Accidents” (1967-68). Van Dijk starred in “Freddy” with Ricky Nelson in the comedy film “Love and Kiss” (1965). He appeared in My Pocket Angel with Andy Griffith and Lee Meriwether (1969). Van Dyke played the role of assistant football coach “Luther Van Dam” in the ABC series of coaches (1989-97). The show aired for 9 seasons, and he was nominated for 4 Emmy Awards. His TV works also include “Young Angels”, “You Hope”, “Fresno”, “13 Queen’s Road”, “Fantasy Island”, “Middle” and “Yes, Honey”. He voiced the character “Grandpa Charles Baker” in the animated film “Annabelle’s Wish” (1997).
