Jerry Lewis is an American comedian, actor and film director. He is best known for his slapstick humor. He is half of the comedy duo “Martin and Lewis,” alongside Dean Martin. His film credits include The Delicate Delinquent (1957), Rock-A-Bye Baby (1958), The Bellboy (1960) and The Nutty Professor (1963). Lewis was born Joseph Levich on March 16, 1926, in Newark, New Jersey. His father, Daniel Levitch, is an MC and vaudeville performer, and his mother, Rachel, is a pianist. Lewis attended Irvington High School in Essex County, New Jersey. He dropped out of school before completing his diploma.

Lewis has been performing with his parents since he was 5 years old. By the age of 15, he dropped out of school and started performing full-time. It was around this time that he developed his “recording method,” in which he imitated the lyrics of popular songs on the gramophone. Lewis met Dean Martin in 1945, and the two formed the comedy team, Martin and Lewis. They performed in various nightclubs and appeared on several live TV shows. Their iconic radio comedy show, The Martin and Lewis Show, debuted in 1949. The duo’s debut, “My Friend Elma,” was also released in 1949. Several other films followed include The Stooge (1952), Artists and Models (1955) and Hollywood or Bust (1956).
Lewis began his solo career in the 1950s. His solo film debut, The Sophisticated Criminal, was released in 1957. From 1957 to 2016, he starred in more than 40 films. Featured films include “Only Money” (1962), “Ladies” (1961) and “The Mad Professor” (1963). Lewis’ directorial debut was the comedy The Doorman (1960). He wrote, directed, produced and starred in several of his own films. Lewis received the Emmy Governor in 2005 and the French Legion of Honor in 1984. He received 2 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, including 1 for the movie. He has also received several lifetime achievement awards for his contributions to the entertainment industry.
Lewis teaches film classes at the University of Southern California. His students included Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. A collection of his lectures was published in the 1977 book The Filmmaker. Lewis served as National President of the Muscular Dystrophy Association from 1954 to 2011. He hosted the annual MDA “Labor Day Telethon,” which raised more than $2.5 billion in donations. In 1977, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his philanthropic work.
