Early life and college career
Jerome Bettis was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1972, the eldest of three children of parents Gladys and Johnny. As a young man, his main sporting hobby was bowling. To make ends meet, he and his brother sold cocaine in Detroit. It was at Mackenzie High that Betis got involved in football seriously for the first time. A running back and linebacker, he was named the best player in the state by the Detroit Free Press during his senior year.
While in college, Betis attended the University of Notre Dame. As a sophomore, he set a school record for 20 touchdowns in a single season. All told, Betis finished his college career with 337 carries for 1,912 yards. In 1993, he dropped out of his senior year to enter the NFL draft. Later, Betis returned to Notre Dame to take various courses for credit.
Los Angeles Rams
Betis was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the first round of the 1993 draft. He had great success as a rookie, rushing for 1,429 yards in his first season. In addition, he recorded an NFL-best 79 starts and 38 runs for 10 or more yards. As a result, Betis was named the All-Pro First Team. He was also named to the NFC’s Pro Bowl team during his first two seasons with the Rams.
After the Rams moved to St. Louis in 1995 and got a new coach, Betis experienced his previous total decline. When the season was over, he made the trade decision.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Betis was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a third-round pick in 1996. In his first season with the team, he rushed for a career-high 1,431 yards and 11 touchdowns and was once again named to the All-NBA First Team. In addition, Betis won the NFL Award of the Year Comeback Player Award and was voted the team’s MVP. His success with the Steelers continued in the years that followed. Betis rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his first six seasons, including three over 1,300 yards. In 1997, he rushed for a career-high 1,665 yards in the team’s first 15 games. That same year, he set a then-NFL record with two overtime touchdowns.
In 2001, Betis led the league in rushing yards with 1,072 before suffering serious hip and groin injuries that caused him to miss the rest of the regular season. Injuries also cost him part of the 2002 season, and in 2003 he was a substitute for Amos Zereoué. Betis bounced back in 2004 when he earned his sixth Pro Bowl berth of his career. However, in early 2005, the Steelers lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC Champions League.

Super Bowl XL and Retirement
In the 12 seasons of his NFL career, Betis made the playoffs five times but never made it to the Super Bowl. That changed in 2006, when the Steelers defeated the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game to advance to Super Bowl XL. The Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 in the Super Bowl in Betis’ hometown of Detroit.
After the victory, Betis announced his retirement on the podium with the Vince Lombardi trophy. He finished his career with 13,662 yards and 91 touchdowns, becoming the fifth leading rusher in NFL history. Additionally, Betis completed 200 passes for 1,449 yards and three touchdowns. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.
post-match career
After retirement, Betis received an honorary doctorate from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan. He then signed on as a studio commentator on NBC’s “American Soccer Night” Sunday pregame show, where he stayed until 2008. Bettis also opened a restaurant on the north side of Pittsburgh called Jerome Bettis’ Grille 36. Later, he started hosting “The Jerome Bettis Show” on WPXI-TV. Bettis has also done NFL analysis for various ESPN shows, including “SportsCenter.”
Personal Life and Philanthropy
After years of dating, Bettis married his girlfriend Trameka Boykin in July 2006. They live in Atlanta, Georgia and have two children, Jerome Jr. and Jada.
Bettis is the founder of his own charitable organization, the Jerome Bettis Bus Stops Here Foundation. Along with other groups, it sponsors the annual Jerome Betis Asthma and Exercise Camp, designed for children with asthma. Bettis also provided more than 1,000 pairs of cleats to schoolchildren in the Detroit area.
