What is Jermaine O’Neal’s Net Worth and Salary?
Jermaine O’Neal is a former American professional basketball player who has a net worth of $50 million. O’Neal started playing in the NBA right out of high school and was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers at the age of 17. When he debuted at 18, he was the youngest player in NBA history.
Jermaine then spent his career with the Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns. He had his greatest success with the Pacers, helping them reach the NBA playoffs six times and setting numerous franchise records. His other accomplishments include a six-time NBA All-Star, the NBA Magic Johnson Award and the NBA Most Improved Player Award.

Jermaine O’Neal was born on October 13, 1978 in Columbia, South Carolina. Raised by a single mother with his brother, O’Neal turned to track and field at an early age. His tall size made him ideal for a future basketball career, and he was inspired by players like Bill Russell. At 14, he was 6-foot-4, and while continuing to grow rapidly, he became one of the most promising high school players in recent memory.
At 16, he faced a controversy that could ruin his career. At one point, the district attorney considered charging him with rape because of an incident with his 15-year-old girlfriend. Although the charges were dropped, the incident affected his performance on the court. This led to an effort by coach George Greene to introduce structure into the boys’ lives.
O’Neal’s high school season proved to be his most convincing. He averaged 22.4 points per game and received many additional honors and accolades. However, poor SAT scores made him unlikely to get a college scholarship. Coach Glymph suggested he go straight to the NBA, following the lead of Kevin Garnett a year ago.

O’Neal took that advice and entered the 1996 NBA draft. He was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers, a team of veterans and talent. Unfortunately, O’Neal missed the first 17 games of the season with a kneecap contusion. That meant his debut came just after he turned 18, making him the youngest NBA player ever. This record was later broken by Andrew Bynum. Later that season, he became the youngest player to score 20 points in an NBA game.
Next season, Portland will struggle to impress. Jermaine mostly came off the bench, averaging only about 10 minutes per game. With doubts about whether he should go to college, O’Neal tried to stay positive but found it difficult to get minutes with the Blazers. In the 1997-1998 season, O’Neal barely played, and Portland was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

The next season, the Blazers made it all the way to the Western Conference finals before being eliminated by the Spurs. Once again, O’Neal contributed little to the team. However, next season the team decided to give O’Neal a four-year, $24 million contract. Unfortunately, Jermaine remained on the bench for most of the season. In the end, the Blazers agreed it wouldn’t work out, and he was traded to the Indiana Pacers.
With the Pacers, O’Neal had some of the most impressive accomplishments of his entire career. Those include his first All-Star selection, the Eastern Conference finals and, of course, more minutes. His era was not without controversy, however, as Jermaine once assaulted a fan who broke into the stadium. He was suspended for 25 games. Ultimately, injury issues led to his being traded to the Toronto Raptors. He then spent the rest of his career with the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns. In 2013, he signed a new contract with the Golden State Warriors. Following wrist surgery, he missed the 2014-2015 season and in 2016 he decided to retire.

In 2011, O’Neal reportedly sold a mansion in Nevada for $3.5 million. He originally bought the house in 2007 for the exact same price. At the time, it was believed that the real estate sale was due to the NBA shutdown, which would impose certain financial constraints on Jermaine. The home features 7,600 square feet of living space, marble bathrooms, movie theater, indoor basketball court and wine room.
In 2013, it was reported that a house in Carmel, Indiana, once owned by O’Neal was hitting the real estate market. The property sold for less than $3 million. Features include nearly 12,000 square feet of living space, six bedrooms, a lighted tennis court (which can also be turned into a basketball court), an infinity pool and two three-car garages.
In 2019, it was reported that Jermaine was again trying to sell his Southlake, Texas home. The home has been put on the market several times over the past few years, but each time it has failed to attract buyers. Unreservedly, O’Neill decided to send the property to the auction block without reservation. Originally built in 2012, the house is essentially a small resort and has been described as a “super mansion”.
Over the years, it has been listed on various occasions for around $11 million, giving or taking $500,000. Nearly 16,500 square feet of living space, eight bedrooms, a game room, a wet bar, a bowling alley, a theater, a gym and an indoor basketball court.
