Jermaine Dupri is an American record producer, rapper and songwriter. He is the founder and CEO of So So Def Recordings. His records include Life in 1472 (1998) and Instructions (2001). He has worked with recording artists such as Mariah Carey, Jay Z, TLC, Migos and Aretha Franklin. He is also known for his lifelong reality show series “Rap Game”. Jermaine Dupri Mauldin was born on September 23, 1972 in Asheville, North Carolina. He is the only child. His father Michael Mauldin (Michael Mauldin) is a former executive of Columbia Records. His mother’s name is Tina. Dupri dropped out of high school in 10th grade to study music.

Dupri started his music career when he was very young. He tried keyboards, drums and dancing. At the age of 10, he performed as a dancer at a Diana Ross concert. He appeared in the music video “The Freaks Come Out” on Whodini’s second album Escape (1984). His next project is the “New York Fresh Festival” in collaboration with Run-DMC, Whodini and Grandmaster Flash. Dupri produced early success for the hip-hop duo Kris Kross (Chris “Papa Mack” Kelly, Chris “Papa Mack” Smith). He produced the duo’s first album Totally Krossed Out (1992). Dupri was the producer of Mariah Carey’s 1995 single “Always Be My Baby” and Lil Kim’s first album Hard Core (1996). He co-authored and produced many tracks from Usher’s second album My Way (1997).
In 1993, Dupri agreed to a distribution agreement between his So So Def label and Columbia Records. His first studio album “Life in 1472” was released in July 1998. It is ranked No. 3 in the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the top R&B/Hip-Hop album chart. These include tracks such as “Money Ain’t A Thang”, “Sweetheart” and “The Party Continues”. His second album “Instructions” was released in October 2001. Guest artists such as Ludacris, Kurrupt, Pharrell Williams and Da Brat were invited. His distribution partnership with Colombia ended in 2002. Dupri has been working with Arista Records and Virgin Records ever since. He won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together”. This song spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Dupri’s memoir “Young, Rich and Dangerous” was published in October 2007. He has won several awards, including ASCAP’s ASCAP Golden Note Award for Best Rhythm and Soul Music Songwriter of the Year and Billboard Otis Redding Excellence Award.
Dupri and Queen Latifah co-created the reality show series “The Rap Game”. The show premiered on Lifetime in January 2016. It features the upcoming young rapper competing with So So Def Recordings for a contract. The winners of the first three seasons were Miss Murato, Mani and Nova. Dupri is the founder of the social networking site “GLOBAL 14”. The online community has thousands of active members and groups.
