Jeff Sessions is an American politician, former junior U.S. senator from Alabama, member of the Republican Party. He served as the 84th Attorney General of the United States under President Donald Trump. Sessions was born Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III on December 24, 1946, in Selma, Alabama. His father, Jefferson Sr., was the owner of a country store. Sessions grew up in High Butte, Alabama, and was a member of the Eagle Scouts. He received his bachelor’s degree from Huntington College in 1969 and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Alabama in 1973. During his time at Huntington, he was a member of the Young Republican Party.

Sessions was drafted into the U.S. Army Reserve from 1973 to 1986. He rose to the rank of captain. He also practices in private practice in Russellville and Mobile. From 1975 to 1977, Sessions served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama. In 1981, he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama. He held this position for 12 years until 1993.
In 1994, Sessions was elected as the 44th Attorney General of Alabama. He was sworn in on January 16, 1995. Sessions ran for Alabama’s U.S. Senate seat in 1996, beating Democrat Roger Bedford. He was re-elected in 2002, 2008 and 2014. Sessions was a key supporter and policy adviser to Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election. He officially endorsed Trump on February 28, 2016. They have common interests, such as building a border wall, opposing abortion and same-sex marriage. Sessions was elected as the 84th Attorney General of the United States. He was succeeded by Matthew Whitaker in November 2018.
