Geoff Stirling was born on March 21, 1921. According to legend, he first got the idea for the Newfoundland Herald in 1946 while hunting alligators in Honduras. During the expedition, a stack of Miami Herald papers fell from the sky. Seeing the Miami Herald stretch all the way into the Central American jungle, Sterling created a newspaper that could reach the most remote outposts in his native Newfoundland. In May 2011, The Newfoundland Herald celebrated its 65th anniversary. NTV is Newfoundland’s first 24-hour radio station. In the 1970s, NTV became a cultural trailblazer by playing music videos of pop rock bands late at night and during other dead periods.
