Jay Thomas is an American Emmy Award-winning actor, comedian and radio talk show host. He is best known for the TV series Mork & Mindy, Cheers, Love and War and Murphy Brown. His film credits include Mr. Hollander’s Work (1995) and Santa Claus 2 (2002). Thomas was born Jon Thomas Terrell on July 12, 1948, in Kermit, Texas. His parents are Katherine and Harry Terrell. He has a brother named Timothy. He grew up on a plantation on the banks of the Atchafalaya River in southern Louisiana. Thomas attended Jesuit High School in New Orleans. There he played football, wrestled, and was a member of ROTC. He continued his education at Gulf Coast College, the University of West Florida, and the University of Tennessee. He holds a master’s degree in sociology from Jacksonville University.

Thomas made his television debut in the late 1970s. He frequently played the Italian deli owner “Remo DaVinci” on the sitcom “Mock and Mindy.” The show stars Garry Marshall and Robin Williams (Mork) and Pam Dawber (Mindy). His next big role was “Eddie LeBec” on the NBC sitcom Cheers (1987-89). Thomas was chosen to host the tabloid talk show “Jerry Gold” on the CBS series Murphy Brown (1989-98). His performance earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. He co-starred in “Russell Meyers” in Married People (1990-91). Thomas played “Jack Stein” in Love and War (1992-95), opposite Susan Day and John Hancock. He voiced the character “God of War” for Hercules: The Animated Series (1998-99) and “Brett Morris” for American Dad! (2007-10). His TV credits include Ink, Hung, Cold Case, Law, and Order: SVU and the TV movie Killing Mr. Griffin (1997). He was also a regular on The Late Show with David Letterman.
Thomas played “Bill Meister” in the feature film Mr. Hollander (1995). The film is directed by Stephen Herrick and stars Richard Dreyfuss. He starred alongside Greg Kinnear in Smile Like You (1997). Other films include Straight Talk (1992) with Dolly Parton, Dragonfly (2002) with Kevin Costner, Tim Allen ) with Santa Claus 2 (2002) and with Lindsay Lohan on Toil (2009). Thomas also appeared in several theatrical productions in New York and Los Angeles. He performed on Woody Allen’s “Writers’ Group.” at the Atlantic Theater in New York.
In addition to TV/film, Thomas has had a long career as a radio host and disc jockey. While studying at Gulf Coast College and Jacksonville University, he started working as a sports announcer. He worked for 3 years in Charlotte, NC as a morning DJ on WAYS-AM and WROQ-FM. Thomas eventually moved to New York. He has worked for several radio stations in New York City, including 99X, WKTU, WXRK and WEPN. He also works at the “KPWR” station in Los Angeles. Thomas began hosting The Jay Thomas Show on SiriusXM satellite radio in 2005. The show airs every Friday afternoon on the uncensored Howard Channel 101.
