He became interested in mathematical measurements and started working as a bookkeeper for a blacksmith, eventually owning half of the blacksmith’s shop.He designed, wrote and published maps for the Ulster County area of New York The History of Delaware County and the Frontier War in New York Later in 1856, Gould started a tannery company in Pennsylvania called Gouldsboro and ran the business successfully with partner Charles Mortimer Leupp until the Panic of 1857. Gould was eventually brought into the railroad industry by his father-in-law, Daniel S. Miller. Gould later became involved in New York City’s political circle called Tammany Hall and became a cartoon character in Thomas Nast’s political cartoons. The climax of Gould’s career began in 1879, when he began to develop the railroad system that would enable the Union Pacific Railroad, Missouri Pacific Railroad, and Transcontinental Railroad. He was a prominent Presbyterian who died of tuberculosis on December 2, 1892 in New York.
