Javed Akhtar was born in Khairabad, Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh in 1945 and studied at Colvin Taluqdars College and Aligarh Muslim University. He moved to Mumbai in the mid-60s to try to work in the film industry.
Akhtar’s career didn’t take off until the start of the next decade, and his first major success was the script for “Andaz.” During this decade, Akhtar worked closely with his scriptwriting partner Salim Khan, who formed the famed writing duo Salim Javid. They went on to write dozens of popular plays, including “Haathi Mere Saathi”, “Yaadon Ki Baaraat”, “Zanjeer”, “Deewaar”, “Premada Kaanike”, “Trishul”, “Kaanike”, “Zamanda” and ” Mr India”. In the early 1980s, he began writing lyrics for films, and soon after, the two split in 1982. They are considered one of the most prolific screenwriters in history and the first to reach stardom in Indian filmmaking. Javed has won nearly a dozen film awards, and in 2013 won India’s second-highest Sahitya Akademi award for his poetry collection Lava. Akhtar was married to his wife Honey Irani until they divorced due to rumors that he was involved with his now second wife, Shabana Azmi. Akhtar and Irani have two children.
