Gay was born on March 10, 1962 in Boston, Massachusetts. She is African American and Portuguese. She grew up near Collier Heights in Atlanta, Georgia. Her mother, Jaye Rudolph, was a high school teacher, and her father, Pastor William Vincent Guy, was the pastor of the historic Atlanta Friendship Baptist Church. He also teaches philosophy and religion at a local university.
Gay attended North End Performing Arts High School, where she developed an interest in acting and dancing. At the age of 17, she moved to New York City and studied dance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center.

Guy first acted as a dancer in seven episodes of “Fame” in 1982. She continued to audition for roles until she made a major breakthrough in the “Cosby Show” spin-off drama “A Different World”.
