Jared Joseph Leto is an American actor, singer and songwriter. He is the lead singer of the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars. Leto was born on December 26, 1971 in Bossier City, Louisiana. He was raised by his mother “Constance” and he has an older brother named Shannon. He studied filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Leto moved to Los Angeles in 1992 for acting. His TV debut was on the ABC sitcom Camp Wilder. He appeared in two episodes playing the character “Dexter”. Leto played the breakthrough role of “Jordan Catalunya” on the ABC series “My So-Called Life.” From 1994 to 1995, he appeared in 19 episodes. Leto’s film debut was the 1995 feature film How to Make an American Quilt. He starred in the 2000 horror film American Psycho alongside Christian Bale and Willem Dafoe. Leto plays the “Joker” opposite Will Smith in the upcoming superhero film “Suicide Squad” (2016). He won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in the film Dallas Buyers Club (2013). Other notable films include Requiem for a Dream (2000), Lord of War (2005), Chapter 27 (2007) and Mr. Nobody (2009).
Leto formed the band Thirty Seconds to Mars in 1998. The band consists of his brother Shannon Leto and lead guitarist Tomo Miličević. The band’s self-titled debut album, 30 Seconds to Mars, was released on August 27, 2002. The album peaked at number 107 on the Billboard 200 and featured the singles “Edge of the Earth” and “Capricorn (A Brand New Name)”. The group followed up with A Beautiful Lie (2005), It’s War (2009) and Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams (2013). Leto and his band were sued by EMI for a $30 million breach of contract in 2008. The lawsuit was settled in 2009.
