Janet Reno is a Democrat and the 78th US Attorney General. She served under the leadership of President Bill Clinton and was the first woman to hold that position. Reno was born on July 21, 1938 in Miami, Florida. Her father Henry Reynolds was a police reporter for the Miami Herald, and her mother Jane Wood was an investigative reporter for the Miami News. She has three siblings, Robert, Mark and Maggie. Reno attended Coral Gables High School in Coral Gables, Florida. She studied chemistry at Cornell University and completed a law degree at Harvard Law School.

Reno became a lawyer in private practice after graduating from Harvard Law School in 1963. She was appointed Director of the Judiciary Committee of the Florida House of Representatives in 1971. Reno was appointed as the State Attorney of Dade County in 1978. She held this position until 1993 and was re-elected four times. During her tenure, she established the Miami Drug Court and reformed the juvenile justice system.
President Bill Clinton nominated Janet Reno as US Attorney General in 1993. She was approved by the Senate and held this position until January 2001. She is one of the longest-term attorney generals, second only to William Water. Reno was responsible for the last raid on a branch of the Davidic cult in 1993. She was also involved in the arrest and conviction of Ted Kaczynski, Timothy McVay, and Terry Nichols. Reno was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2002, she failed to run for the Democratic nomination for governor of Florida.

Janet Reno passed away on November 7, 2016, at the age of 78. According to reports, her cause of death was a complication of Parkinson’s disease. She was first diagnosed with this disease in 1995. Reno has no children and has never been married. Her sister and several nieces and nephews survived.
