Janet Damita Jo Jackson is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and the youngest sister of pop legend Michael Jackson. She is one of the best-selling artists in the history of contemporary music, with more than 160 million records sold. Janet was born to parents Katherine and Joseph Jackson on May 16, 1966, in Gary, Indiana. She has eight siblings, Jackie, Tito, Malone, Jermaine, Michael, Raby, LaToya and Randy. Jackson grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness. She attended Lanai Road Elementary, followed by Portola Middle School. She continued her education at Valley Professional School, graduating in 1984.

From 1977 to 1979, she played the role of “Penny Gordon Woods” on the sitcom “Good Times.” Other TV shows include The Series, A New Kind of Family, Different Strokes and Fame. Jackson rose to fame when she released her third album, Control, in February 1986. The album reached #1 on the Billboard 200 and has since been certified 5x Platinum. It features the singles “What Did You Do For Me Lately”, “Hate” and “When I Think of You”. The album was nominated for three Grammy Awards and won two American Music Awards. Her fourth album, Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Country 1814, was released in 1989 with similar success.
Jackson signed a $32 million contract with Virgin Records in 1991. It was the largest record contract in history at the time. She released albums, Janet (1993), Velvet Rope (1997), Everything For You (2001), Dammitage (2004) and 20 YO (2006). The album “Discipline” was released by Island Records in 2008, and her latest album “Unbreakable” was released in 2015 by her own label, Rhythm Nation. Jackson holds the record for the most top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with 18 consecutive hits. Her star was placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1990.
