She graduated from Victoria University of Wellington in 1975 and studied at Chelsea School of Art. She graduated from the Sydney School of Art in 1979 and turned to film and created Tissues in 1980.

She graduated from the Australian School of Film, Television and Radio in 1984. In 1982, she wrote and directed the short film Discipline Exercise – Peele. Campion’s feature film debut was Sweetheart in 1989, for which she wrote and directed. She wrote and directed The Piano in 1993. “Piano” won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and became the first female filmmaker to win the Palme d’Or. She is also the second woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. Campion chaired the jury of the Short Films and Cinéfondation sections of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. She was also the head of the jury at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival Main Competition. In total, Campion has received more than 50 awards. Jane married Colin David Englert in 1992 and had two children before their divorce. Their daughter was actress Alice Englert, and their son died 12 days later.
