He is best known for co-creating the comic Tank Girl and the virtual band Gorillaz. While studying at Northbrook College, he created Atomtan, a fan magazine.
He then worked and created comic strips for the magazine Deadline, including Tank Girl with Alan Martin. He began designing album covers for bands like Senseless Things and Cud, and writing for Commodore User magazine. Tank Girl was selected by MGM for a film, which was released in 1995, but Hewlett was barely involved in the project. After the deadline was cancelled, Jamie moved into Damon Alban’s apartment in Blur. The two came up with the idea for the virtual band Gorillaz. Hewlett came up with character designs. His work won him the 2006 Designer of the Year Award. Hewlett and Albarn won Songwriter of the Year at the 2006 Ivor Novello Awards. The two collaborated on “Monkey: Journey to the West” in 2006. Jamie married Emma de Caunes in 2011. In 2014, a Kickstarer campaign raised funds for a new Tank Girl book, 21st Century Tank Girl.
