James Woods is an American actor and producer. His film credits include El Salvador (1986), The Promise (1986), My Name Is Bill W. (1989) and Ghosts of Mississippi (1996). He voiced the animated series “Hercules” as well as video games such as “Grand Theft Auto” and “Kingdom Hearts”. James Howard Woods was born on April 18, 1947 in Vernal, Utah. His father, Gail, was an army officer, and his mother, Martha, was a daycare provider. He had a younger brother, Michael Jeffrey, who died of a heart attack in 2006. Woods was raised in Warwick, Rhode Island by his mother and stepfather, Thomas Dixon. He attended Pilgrim High School and then entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He majored in political science but never completed his degree.

Woods directed and starred in several plays while at MIT. After college, he became a student of the Boston Theater Company. He worked under stage manager Tim Affleck. He also cited Affleck as the reason he became an actor. Woods made his Broadway debut in the 1970 production of Frank McMahon’s Borstal Boy. His role as “Richard Boyle” in El Salvador (1986) earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Woods won his first Emmy for the CBS TV movie The Promise (1986). He won two Emmys for “My Name is Bill W.” (1989) and “Citizen Cohen” (1992). Woods played the supporting role of “Byron de la Beckwith” in the drama “Ghost of the Mississippi” (1996). Recent films include “The White House Falls” with Channing Tatum (2013), “Straw Dogs” with James Marsden (2011) and Steve Jobs with Ashton Kutcher ( year 2013). He voiced “General Hein” in Final Fantasy: Inside the Soul (2001), “Falcon” in Stuart Little 2 (2002), and “Reggie Belafonte” in Surf’s Up (2007).
Woods lent his unique voice to the animated series Hercules. From 1998 to 1999, he voiced the character “Hadis” for 27 episodes. He also voiced Disney’s Mouse House and the video game Kingdom Hearts. Woods was nominated for an Emmy for his role as Mayor “Rudy Giuliani” in the TV movie “Rudy: The Rudy Giuliani Story” (2003). He played “Sebastian Stark” on the CBS legal drama Shark (2006-08). His TV credits include Family Guy, Justice League Action, ER, Entourage and Ray Donovan. He is also known for the voice of “Mike Toreno” in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
