James Tobuck is an American screenwriter, film director and actor. Between 1974 and 2017, he wrote and directed more than 12 films. The crime drama “Bugsy” (1991) was nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. James Lee Toback was born on November 23, 1944 in New York City, New York. His parents are Selma Judith and Lionel Tobac. He graduated from Feldstone College (1963) and Harvard University (1966). Tobacco had a nearly fatal experience with the drug LSD during college. According to reports, he took a dose that lasted 8 days before taking the antidote.

Before filming, Tobak was a reporter. During his tenure, he wrote an article about professional football player Jim Brown for “Mr. Fashion” magazine. The assignment resulted in him living in Brown’s house for more than a year. His experience is recorded in the book “Jim: The Author’s Egocentric Memoirs About the Great Jim Brown” (1972). In the early 1970s, Tobuck taught creative writing at the City College of New York. His first screenplay was the crime drama “The Gambler” (1974). Part of the film was shot at the City College. It is directed by Karel Reitz, starring James Kane and Lauren Hutton.
Tobuck’s directorial debut was the TV series “Finger” (1978) starring Harvey Keitel. Many years later, French director Jacques Audiard remakes the film as “The Beat of My Heartbeat” (2005). Tobac’s third film “Love and Money” was released in 1982. He has served as a screenwriter, director and producer. His screen debut was “Leo Boscovitch” in Exposed (1983). He played a small role in Woody Allen’s “Alice” (1990), starring Mia Farrow. Toback wrote the original script for the crime drama “Bugsy” (1992). The film has received 10 Oscar nominations, including the best original screenplay award. He directed the documentary “Tyson” (2008) starring Mike Tyson. His film works include two girls and a man (1997), black and white (1999), a Harvard man (2001), when will I be loved (2004), temptation and abandonment (2013) and the private life of modern women (2017) ).
