James Mattis is a retired general in the United States Marine Corps and served as the 11th commander of the United States Central Command. In December 2016, he was nominated by President Donald Trump as Secretary of Defense. James Norman Mattis was born on September 8, 1950 in Pullman, Washington. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1968 and from Central Washington State University in 1972. He is also an alumnus of Marine Corps University and National War College.

Matisse began serving in the U.S. Marine Corps for 43 years in 1969. He was appointed second lieutenant in January 1972. As a captain, he commanded a rifle and weapon company in the 1st Marine Corps. Major Mattis commands the Marine Corps recruiting station in Portland, Oregon. During the Persian Gulf War, he commanded the 1st Battalion of the 7th Marine Corps with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Matisse commanded the 7th Marine Corps as a colonel during the Afghanistan War. As a major general, he led the 1st Marine Division during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
As a general, Mattis served as the commander of the United States Joint Forces Command (2007-10). He also served as the Supreme Commander of the Transformation of NATO Allied Forces from 2007 to 2009. Mattis was selected by President Barack Obama in 2010 to replace General David Petraeus as the commander of the US Central Command. He held this position from August 2010 until his retirement in 2013. Mattis was nominated as the Secretary of Defense of the Trump Administration in December 2016. He took office on January 20, 2017.
