A former emergency room physician, Leininger is the founder of Kinetic Concepts (KCI), a global medical technology company that provides a variety of products related to wounds and wound healing.
Born James R. Leininger in 1944, he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University in 1965 and 1969, respectively. After graduation, he worked as an emergency room physician, but began amassing a net worth of $1.3 billion when he founded KCI in 1976. However, he is no longer the owner of the company he set up in a one-bedroom apartment. In November 2012, a consortium of private equity firms led by Apax Partners bought the company for $6.3 billion. By then, Leininger was the largest individual shareholder, and he then had to sell his stake as Apax took KCI private. However, he continued to serve as honorary chairman of the company’s board of directors. In addition to KCI, Leininger co-founded the Renal Care Group and ATX Technologies, and has served on the board of directors since 1994. Today, Leininger invests primarily through his Medcare Investment Fund, which manages a total of $1 billion in assets. In addition to supporting school reform, he is a longtime donor to Texas Gov. Rick Perry. He is also a basketball enthusiast and is part owner of San Antonio Sports.
