James was diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome and Asperger’s syndrome. He attended the Santa Cruz Conservatory under the name Musicscool and was a member of two bands before American Idol. He is the lead singer of a metal band called Hollywood Scar, and another band called Freewheeling. The Hollywood Scars are heavily influenced by major groups such as Metallica, Pantera, Judas Priest, Dream Theater, Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden and Montley Crue.
