James Comey is an American attorney and former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Before that, he served as U.S. Attorney General. James Brien Comey, Jr. was born on December 14, 1960 in Yonkers, New York. His father James works in corporate real estate and his mother Joan is a computer consultant. He has three siblings, Peter, Christopher and Patricia. Comey grew up in Allendale, New Jersey, where he attended Northern Highlands Regional High School. He received his BA (1982) from the College of William and Mary and his Juris Doctor (1985) from the University of Chicago Law School.

Comey’s legal career began as a paralegal to New York City Judge John M. Walker, Jr. Later, he was a partner at the law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. Comey became Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York in 1987. There he served until 1993 under Rudy Giuliani. During his tenure, he helped prosecute the notorious Gambino crime family. Comey joined the law firm of McGuireWoods in 1993. He was Assistant Attorney General for the Eastern District of Virginia from 1996 to 2001.
Comey served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from January 2002 to December 2003. He served as Deputy Attorney General of the United States from December 2003 to August 2005 under President George W. Bush. Comey was nominated by President Barack Obama to be director of the FBI in June 2013. His nomination was confirmed and he was sworn in on September 4, 2013. He succeeds the retired Robert Mueller. Comey oversaw the FBI’s investigation into the Hillary Clinton email controversy. He also led the investigation into allegations of wiretapping against President Donald Trump. He was fired by Trump on May 9, 2017.
Comey was a member of the Republican Party for most of his life. He became an independent voter in 2016. He has supported past presidential candidates such as Senator John McCain and Gov. Mitt Romney.
