At 16, Carter embarked on his first musical tour, traveling to Scandinavia with an international jazz band. Three years later, he was invited to play with Lester Bowie’s quintet at the New York City Jazz Club. Carter moved to New York shortly after, and has since become a well-known figure in the genre. Carter has written nearly 20 albums, including 1991’s Difficult Young Tenor: Together Alone, 1995’s A Really Quiet Storm, 1996’s Talking to the Elders, 2003’s Ladies’ Day Gardenia”, “Heaven on Earth” in 2009, and “Crossroads” in 2011. Carter has won several accolades over the course of his career, including Down Beat Magazine’s Choice Award for Best Baritone Saxophone Player over several years. He has performed with a number of well-known musicians including Wnyton Marsails, Mingus Big Band, Frank Lowe & the Saxemble, Kathleen Battle, Lester Bowie, World Saxophone Quartet and Dee Dee Bridgewater. He plays the saxophone, flute and bass clarinet most often.
