Jake LaMotta is an American former professional boxer and stand-up comedian. He was nicknamed “The Angry Bull”. From 1949 to 1951, he held the title of world middleweight champion. LaMotta was the subject of Martin Scorsese’s film Raging Bull (1980) starring Robert De Niro. He is also known for his rivalry with Sugar Ray Robinson. Jack was born Giacobbe LaMotta on July 10, 1922 in the Bronx, New York. He has four siblings, Joe, Al, Maria and Anne.

LaMotta started out as a street fighter. His father encouraged him to box in an effort to make money for the family. In 1941, at the age of 19, LaMotta turned professional. He played a total of 106 professional games throughout his career. His record is 83 wins (30 by KO), 19 losses and 4 draws. In the ring, LaMotta is known for his intimidating fighters and punches. He won his first 14 fights at middleweight. His first loss was to Jimmy Reeves in September 1941. LaMotta took on boxing legend Sugar Ray Robinson. He won 1 of their 6 games. He fought other boxers including Billy Fox, Fritz Ziewicz, Tony Janiello and Tommy Bell. LaMotta won the world middleweight title in June 1949 by defeating Marcel Serdin of France. He defended the title against Tiberio Mitri and Laurent Dottier in July 1950 and September 1950. LaMotta retired from boxing in 1954. He was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1986 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
LaMotta’s autobiography, Raging Bull: My Story, was published in 1970. It was adapted into a 1980 black-and-white film by Martin Scorsese. The film starred Robert De Niro and won two Oscars. A second book was published in 1986, titled “Raging Bull II”. LaMotta toured as a stand-up comedian. His film credits include The Hustler (1961), Firepower (1979) and Maniac Cop (1988). He starred in the 2012 off-Broadway play Ladies and Champions.

Jack LaMotta passed away on September 19, 2017 at the age of 95. His death was reportedly due to complications from pneumonia. He was survived by his seventh wife, Denise Baker, and his four daughters, Jacklyn, Christie, Elisa and Mia. His two sons, Jack Jr. and Joseph, both died in 1998. LaMotta is 5-foot-8 and of Italian descent. His net worth is estimated at $10 million.
