Born on December 14, 1957, Jamie Gilinski Bacal made his fortune by turning his father’s fortune into a multi-billion dollar financial conglomerate. His father, Isaac, owned two companies, plastics company Rimax and snack food market Yupi.
Gilinski has a BS in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech and an MBA from Harvard Business School and began his career in Morgan Stanley’s M&A division. When he moved back to Colombia in the 1990s, he purchased the Colombian assets of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) at regular prices. Soon Gilinski renamed it Banco Andino and developed it into one of Colombia’s most efficient banks, which he later sold for $70 million. With George Soros as an investor, he did the same with Colombian Bank, and in early 2000, Gilinski merged the two banks to form Banco GNB Sudameris, which opened in 2012 with 4 acquired HSBC’s Latin American business for $100 million. In addition to his bank, he is a real estate developer who will partner with the Livingstone Brothers’ London and Regional Properties to create the 2,750-acre Panama Pacific on the outskirts of Panama City. Additionally, Gilinsky is known for supporting the philanthropic work of various foundations, such as the Santa Fe Foundation, Harvard’s Chabad House, Harvard’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, and more. In addition, he and his wife Raquel initiated the Jaime and Raquel Gilinski Fellowship at Harvard Business School, an MBA scholarship for students from Latin America.
