Ricketts graduated from Creighton University in 1968. He and several partners founded First Omaha Securities in 1975. First Omaha was a retail securities brokerage that later became TD Ameritrade.
In addition to being the founder, he was the CEO and chairman of TD Ameritrade until his retirement from the board in 2011. Ricketts also founded High Plains Bison in 2004, a retailer of natural bison beef. They are the official bison supplier at Wrigley Field in Chicago. He founded American Films in 2008, which produced films such as The Conspirator in 2010. He founded DNAinfo.com, a digital news service, in 2009. Joe’s family acquired a 95 percent controlling stake in Wrigley Field and Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs in 2009. They also acquired a 20% stake in Chicago’s Comcast Sports Network. Joe’s son Tom Ricketts is the chairman of the Cubs, and his other children Pete, Todd and Laura are on the board. Joe has been involved in politics, starting the independent organization Taxpayers Against earmarks and establishing the End Spending Fund.
