Born in Brooklyn, New York City in 1948, he is best known as the founder of global investment management firm Millennium Management LLC. Englander, who is of Jewish descent, became interested in the stock exchange at an early age.

He had started trading stocks as a college student, then worked as an intern at the New York Stock Exchange and Oppenheimer. In 1970, he earned a degree in finance from New York University. After unsuccessfully trying to get an MBA at the same university, he found a full-time job at Kaufmann, Alsberg & Co. He bought a seat on the exchange after U.S. stock options went public. In 1977, Englander formed a floor brokerage firm called IA Englander & Co, of which he remains a minority shareholder. Eight years later, he founded the investment firm Jamie Securities Co. with John Mulheren Jr. And in 1989, together with Ronald Shear, he established Millennium Management LLC with $35 million in capital. Since then, the company has grown into a multi-billion dollar business that makes profits by using low-risk management strategies. As of November 2013, it had 1,300 employees, managed approximately $20.1 billion in assets, and had offices throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The Israeli Englishman is married with three children and currently lives in New York City. His England Foundation donated $20 million to charities including Jewish schools and organizations in 2016 alone.
