Imre Kertész is a Hungarian novelist, Nobel Prize winner for literature and Holocaust concentration camp survivor. He is best known for his novel “Lifeless”. He was born on November 9, 1929, into a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary. Kertész was deported to Auschwitz at the age of 14 and later to Buchenwald. Liberated in 1945.
Profession
After returning to Hungary, Kertész worked for the Budapest newspaper Világosság until 1951. He then served two years of military service. His first novel, Sorstalanság, was published in 1975 and recounted his experiences in the concentration camps. The English translation “Fateless” was published in 1992, followed by a second translation “Fateless” in 2004. It was later used in the 2005 film directed by Lajos Koltai. Kertész won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2002. Other awards and honors include the Herder Prize (2000), the Goethe Prize (2004) and the Order of St. Stephen of Hungary (2014). Other novels by Kertész include Kaddish for an Unborn Child, Liquidation, The Pathseeker and Dossier K.
