Immortal Technique was born in Lima, Peru, also known as Felipe Andres Coronel, and moved to New York City as a child. He broke the law many times growing up and ended up in jail for a year after going to college.
After serving his sentence, he took classes at Baruch College while continuing to hone the rap skills he began developing during his incarceration. He earned a reputation as a great fighting MC and started selling his music on the street. His first independently recorded and released full-length album garnered the attention of several publications, and Source magazine included him on the “Unsigned Hype” list of the best unsigned rap artists. He was subsequently selected by Source as “Hip-Hop Quotes” in 2003 and remains the only unsigned rap artist to receive this honor. He signed with Viper Records in 2004 and has since released two new albums and re-releases of two of his earlier independent projects.
