Igor Makarov Net Worth: Igor Makarov is a Russian businessman who has a net worth of $2.1 billion. Mr. Makarov is the founder and owner of ITERA (International Group of Companies), a major Russian exporter of natural gas to Turkmenistan in the second half of the 1990s. Born in 1962 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Igor Viktorovich Makarov received his bachelor’s degree from the Turkmen State University in 1983, before serving in the Soviet Army.
Next, he worked for a period of time as a professor at Kazan State University (1986-1989) before transferring to the private sector (1989-1992). Founded ITERA in 1992, it is mainly engaged in natural gas exploration and processing in Russia, CIS countries and Turkmenistan. More recently, the group has expanded into other areas of the energy industry, including oil extraction, pipeline transportation and coal mining, civil and industrial engineering, and finance and insurance. ITERA formed a joint venture with the oil company Rosneft in 2012, and ITERA was estimated to have a net business worth around $3 billion at the time. Makarov ended up owning large gas fields after tapping into gas-rich Turkmenistan and senior officials at Gazprom, the Russian gas monopoly. But in 2001, when Vladimir Putin replaced key Gazprom officials, Itera all but collapsed. However, Makarov managed to save the company by handing over some of its assets to Gazprom. Through Itera, he also holds a stake in the Russian professional ice hockey league Dinamo Riga.
