Bogart was born on December 25, 1899 in New York City. He is the eldest son of Belmont DeForest Bogart and Maud Humphrey. His father was a cardiopulmonary surgeon and his mother was a commercial illustrator who went on to become the art director of the fashion magazine The Delineator. He has two younger sisters – Francis and Catherine – and describes his childhood as straightforward and emotionless. Before being admitted to Phillips, he attended Delancey School and Trinity School, a boarding school his parents hoped would help him get into Yale. However, Bogart only spent one semester at Philips before leaving because he failed most of his courses and had trouble at school.
After failing at school, Bogart joined the U.S. Navy during the First War in 1918. He served for over a year before leaving in 1919 as the bosun’s 3rd mate. He then returned home, started working in the offices of a film company, and soon began taking small roles in various stage productions.

His modest roles in film and play grew steadily throughout the 1920s, although much of his early theatrical work declined sharply after the Wall Street Crash of 1920. He then headed to Hollywood to begin larger film roles. He signed a $750-a-week contract with Fox Studios. In 1930, he starred in “Upstream” with friend and actor Spencer Tracy. A year later, in 1930, he starred in “Bad Sister” with Bette Davis. He went on to travel to New York for occasional theatrical productions and starred in the 1934 Broadway production of “Murder Invitation.” His performance was well received by critics and further cemented his acting career. He then landed the role in Petrified Forest, which also performed well and was made into a movie, which Bogart also starred in, making him a true Hollywood star.
However, despite his early success, Bogart began to be portrayed as a gangster in a number of small crime drama films produced by Warner Bros., with whom he signed a 26-week contract of $550 a week. He’s also often overshadowed by Warner Bros. main characters — James Cagney and Edward Robinson — who often get more interesting and diverse parts of the film. Eventually, however, Bogart started getting larger, more male-style movie roles.
In 1941, starred in “High Sierra” and “Falcon of Malta”. The latter film became a commercial hit and a major win for Bogart, who later said he was proud of his work on the film. In 1942, he landed his first romantic lead role in the film Casablanca, which was also a hit and has since become a classic. It won Best Picture at the 16th Academy Awards in 1943, and Bogart was nominated in the Best Actor category. In 1944, Bogart was introduced to actress Lauren Bacall. In addition to their romantic relationship, the two would go on to star in a number of films. They appeared in 1944’s Being and Not, a loose adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel. Two years later, they appeared in 1946’s “The Big Sleep,” to audience success but mixed reviews from critics. In 1947, the pair starred in the suspenseful crime film “Dark Passage,” and then in 1948 in their last film together, “Key Largo.”
In addition to working with Bacall, Bogart went on to star in other films. He appeared in “Treasures of the Sierra Madre,” which won the Academy Award for Best Director in 1947. He also founded his own film company, Santana Productions, in 1948, which distributes most of its films through Columbia Pictures. Some of these films include “Knock Any Door” starring Bogart, “Tokyo Joe” and “A Lonely Place.”
In 1951, he appeared in “Queen of Africa” with Katharine Hepburn. The film was shot in a difficult four-month period in the Belgian Congo. Bogart was married four times in his life, first in 1926 with Helen Mencken. They divorced in 1927. A year later, he married Mary Phillips, and they remained together until 1937. He then developed a relationship with Mayo Methot until his divorce in 1945, largely due to his fondness for Lauren Bacall, whom he married in 1945. They stayed together until his death. Bogart and Bacall have two children, Stephen and Leslie.
Bogart developed esophageal cancer in the final stages of his life, possibly due in part to his smoking and drinking habits. By the end of 1956, the cancer had metastasized, and he fell into a coma a few weeks after his 57th birthday, before passing away. He was cremated and buried at the Forest Lawn Memorial in Glendale, California. In 1960, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
