Hubert James Marcel Count Taffin de Givenchy was born in Beauvais, France in February 1927. Inspired by the 1937 Paris Universal Exhibition, Hubert wanted to work in fashion design.
He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and produced his first designs for Jacques Fath in 1945. De Givenchy collaborated with unknown Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain. He worked for designer Elisa Schiaparelli. Hubert founded the House of Givenchy in 1952 in Pairs. His first collection was named after Parisian top model Bettina Graziani. Hubert designed nearly every outfit that actress Audrey Hepburn wore in her films, most famously the little black dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Jackie Kennedy wore one of his clothes to her husband Kennedy’s funeral. He launched a fragrance line, a ready-to-wear line and a men’s line. In 1981, Givenchy’s fragrance line was spun off to Veuve Clicquot, while the fashion house was spun off to LVMH. His famous clients include Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and many more. In 1970, Hubert was inducted into the International Best Dressed Hall of Fame. He retired from the fashion industry in 1995. He designed the stamps issued by the French Post Office in 2007. Hubert de Givenchy was awarded the Legionnaires’ Medal and the Order of Letters and Arts. Hubert de Givenchy passed away on March 10, 2018 at the age of 91.
