Herbert Raymond McMaster is a lieutenant general in the United States Army. He served as a national security adviser for one year under President Donald Trump. McMaster was born on July 24, 1962 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. McMaster studied at Valley Forge Military Academy (1980) and the United States Military Academy (1984). McMaster was appointed as a second lieutenant in the United States Army in 1984. He was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division of Fort Hood and served in the 1st Battalion of the 66th Armored Regiment. From 1989 to 1992, McMaster was assigned to the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment of the Warner Barracks in Germany. He served during the Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Afghanistan War.
From 2012 to 2014, McMaster served as a commander at the Mobile Center of Excellence in Fort Benning, Georgia. He currently serves as the Director of the Army Capability Integration Center and the Deputy Commander of Future, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. On February 20, 2017, McMaster was sworn in as the 26th National Security Advisor of the Trump Administration. Trump’s original candidate, Michael Flynn, resigned on February 13, 2017 24 days after taking office. McMaster resigned as National Security Advisor on March 22, 2018 and was replaced by John R. Bolton.
McMaster taught military history at West Point Military Academy from 1994 to 1996. His book “Negligence of Duty” was published by Harper Perronelli in 1997. This book talks about the role of the army during the Vietnam War and is part of his doctoral dissertation. UNC paper.
