Dennis Howard Marks is a former Welsh drug smuggler who later became a writer and performer. After the publication of his autobiography “Mr. Nice” in the mid-1990s, he rose to fame. Max was born in Kenfisher, Wales on August 13, 1945. His father Dennis was a merchant navy captain, and his mother Edna was a teacher. Max attended the Cal Grammar School in Pontisimo. He studied physics at Belliol College, Oxford University. He continued his education at the University of London and later the University of Sussex.

Max first encountered marijuana while studying at Balliol College, Oxford University. He began to use and sell these drugs to people in his circle. After establishing several contacts, Max started this business internationally. By 1972, his average price for each shipment was thousands of dollars. He was arrested in 1973 but skipped bail in 1974. He lived briefly in Italy before returning to England in 1974. Mark operates under many pseudonyms, the most famous being “Donald Nice”. He has business dealings with various groups including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Irish Republican Army, MI6, and the Mafia. Max was arrested in 1988 and extradited to the United States. He was convicted by DEA and sentenced to 25 years in prison in Terre Haute. He was released on parole in 1995 after serving seven years in prison.

Profession
In 1996, Max published his autobiography “Mr. Nice”. This book is an international bestseller and was later translated into many languages. It was adapted into a film directed by Bernard Rose in 2010. Max followed up with Howard Max’s Drug Storybook (2001), Mr. Nice: The Past Life from Wales to South America (2006), and Sympathy for the Devil (2011). He also appeared in movies such as “Human Traffic” (1999) and “I Know You Know” (2009).

Howard Marks died on April 10, 2016, at the age of 70. According to reports, his cause of death was bowel cancer. In January 2015, someone revealed for the first time that he was battling an inoperable cancer. Max has been married twice, first to Ilze Kadegis and then to Judy Lane. He has four children, Amber, Francesca, Patrick and Myfanwy.
